Overview of Modern Chinese Volume 1
This volume includes 16 lessons, preceded by a foundational unit on Mandarin pronunciation to support beginners. It introduces 868 vocabulary items, 95.2% of which align with the MOE’s Level 3, Stage 7 word list. To support gradual literacy development, a subset of vocabulary is designated for recognition only.
The volume covers 78 grammar points, all matched to the MOE’s graded grammar framework. Grammar is presented through visual grammar boxes featuring model sentences that clearly illustrate word order, aiding beginner comprehension. Supporting icons are flexibly placed beside or below the boxes to assist teaching and learning.
The focus of this volume is to build foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, enabling learners to form and understand complete sentences and achieve basic communication in daily life.
